The Manchester United Supporters Trust and Independent Manchester United Supporters Association Movement have set up a petiton to the UK Government asking for legislation which allows partial ownership of any football club by its fans. The FGR Trust have been asked to promote this petition and ask its members to consider signing it.
Many Supporters Trusts hold shares in their club and therefore have some degree of ownership, any legislation if passed would set a minimum % ownership for all clubs.
The concept is established in Germany in the 50+1 rule whereby a minimum of 51% of the club must be owned by club members. This still allows for considerable investment opportunities for private business to invest while preventing them from having overall control of the direction of the club.
This petition is so far supported and promoted by the Manchester United, Norwich, QPR, Dorchester, Fulham, Exeter City and the Arsenal supporters trusts.
