Just a short distance across the valley from the New Lawn stadium, the Minchinhampton Old Course was the venue for the first Community Am-Am Golf Day.
The event was organised by golf professional and FGR Supporters Trust member, Peter Dangerfield and Eve Clements, Ladies Captain and Juniors Organiser at the Old Course. Through their sterling efforts, proceeds from the event, will benefit the Trust, Shortwood United FC and the Minchinhampton Old Course ‘Juniors Section’.
With entry fees having been set at a very reasonable sum of £60 per team of 4 players, over 43 teams took part in the event. For those that follow golf or at least profess to understand the different competition scoring systems, the days event was a Stableford, based on ¾ handicap with the best two team member’s scores counting on each hole. There was a secondary competition for best individual scores.
The total fund was boosted by an additional ‘pay £5 to win £10’ challenge on three separate holes, including the 10th where, the golfers tee shot had to finish inside professional Peter’s ball. A tough ask with Peter lying only four feet from the hole. There were plenty of other ‘mini’ competitions taking place over the course, with longest drive on the 18th, nearest the pin on 14th and other separate challenges for the Ladies and Juniors taking part.
The most unusual competition of the day, involved being furthest from the pin on the green at the 16th, an idea thought up by sponsors, Anderson Norman, Landscape Gardeners, who had put up a days gardening as the prize to the winner.
Prizes for the day were available for the top 5 teams, Best Men’s score for two separate handicap groups (1-14 and 15-28), Best Lady and Best Junior.
So it was then that on a beautiful cotswold Spring day, at 7.30am that the first team teed off, followed at 10 minute intervals until the last grouping went out at 2.30 in the afternoon. Included in the large field, were representatives from Shortwood United FC, including Manager John Evans and from Forest Green Rovers, - 6 handicapper and the day’s team captain, Jim Harvey who was ably supported by Jerry Gill, Club Physio Ian Rodgerson and Director Ken Boulton.
As is the case at such events, scores were mixed but there are always groups who score well and this competition was no different. An individual score of 36 points translates into playing a very good round of golf. If you double that for the team score, it means that anything over 72 points from a ¾ handicap is mighty fine going. At the end of the day, only two points separated the top five teams with the winners having amassed a very impressive 87 points, no doubt to the usual resounding golfing cry of ‘bandits’.
At the evening’s prizegiving ceremony in the Clubhouse, the following were the eventual prizewinners:

Each of the above are entitled to the £10 win bonus, but it is bad luck for Mr Harvey as it seems you can only collect it once, despite being a top performer in all three challenges.
The Anderson Norman challenge of furthest from the pin on the 16th hole was won by Rich Evans.
The day was a fantastic all round success and after deducting the cost of prizes, the three beneficiaries will each receive £400. It is hoped to make the event an annual occurence in the diary and we look forward to its continued success.
The Supporters Trust are extremely grateful to Peter and Eve for all their hard and excellent work.
