Despite the cold, winter weather the footballers of Park Junior were soon glowing with a visit from Les Afful and Paul Stonehouse. The profile of the club and the enthusiasm of the youngsters were substantially lifted by the presence of these two dedicated footballers to one of Stroud’s largest schools.
The children had prepared a wide selection of questions that were put to Les and Paul in a packed school hall. All aspects of a footballers’ life were covered from how to develop skills to favourite meals to, how much do you get? The session was held days before the Rochdale F.A.Cup game so the possible result was a predictable question. Both Paul and Les forecasted a home win…..of course they were right!
Both players did some heading with every child in the hall and the cheers went up when Les and one of the youngest boys managed double figures. Neil Cudddihy, the PE Co-ordinator, stressed
“It is important for the children to understand that football is not all about the Premiership clubs. They need to know that an interest in the game will lead to a lot of other benefits in life and help them develop skills as young learners”
Phil Butterworth, from the FGR Supporters Trust organised the visit and he was full of praise for the dedication of the players and their willingness to go into schools and talk to the children.
“Paul and Les were able to get down to the children’s level and engage them both in conversation and in an action packed training session”
More visits are planned and this is another way the Trust is promoting the name of FGR in the community.
